Biography
Recognized for his elegant singing, his velvety timbre, and his charisma on stage, canadian baritone Hugo Laporte won prizes in numerous competitions, including the Teatro alla Scala Prize at the Belvedere Competition in Austria and, earlier in his career, the Grand Prize at the OSM Competition in Canada.
In 2023, he made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in the roles of Hermann / Schlémil (The Tales of Hoffmann) alongside Vittorio Grigolo and Luca Pisaroni, conducted by Frédéric Chaslin.
Having appeared in more than 25 roles, his most notable include: Figaro (The Barber of Seville), Count Almaviva (The Marriage of Figaro), Malatesta (Don Pasquale), Belcore (The Elixir of Love), Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), Mercutio (Romeo and Juliet), Marcello (La Bohème), Escamillo (Carmen), Lord Ashton (Lucia di Lammermoor), and Raimbaud (Le Comte Ory). He also regularly participates in the creation of new lyrical works, including Yourcenar, an Island of Passions (E. Champagne/H. Dorion/M-C. Blais), The Man Who Laughs (A. Ichmouratov/V. Hugo), and Miguela (T. Dubois/J. Barbier).
Very active on the canadian stage, Mr Laporte is regularly invited at Opéra de Québec and Opéra de Montréal, as well as main orchestras, ensembles and festivals around the country.
A sought-after performer in the concert repertoire, he sings works such as Carmina Burana, Fauré's Requiem, Brahms's German Requiem, Duruflé's Requiem, Rossini's Petite messe solennelle, Gounod's Messe solennelle de Sainte-Cécile, Puccini's Messa di Gloria, and G. Finzi's In Terra Pax.
Chamber music, particularly French melodie, also holds an important place for him. He can be heard alongside pianist Olivier Godin in the Intégrale des mélodies pour voix et piano de Jules Massenet recording, awarded an Opus Prize in 2022 under the ATMA Classique label. He also presents the recital Au pays des amours, a splendid program of melodies by Quebec composer Jean-François Mailloux.
Mr. Laporte began his vocal studies with Danielle Demers, and later obtained a master's degree in music with honors at Laval University, under the tutelage of soprano Patricia Fournier. He has also refined his skills with renowned teachers and mentors including Ghinka Radilova, Antonio Carangelo, Benita Valente, and Jean-François Lapointe. He wishes to thank the Jeunes ambassadeurs lyriques program for their significant assistance in the development of his international career.

Reviews
" Hugo Laporte delivered an excellent performance, embodying a superb barber from every perspective. His generous voice, with a rich luster, homogeneous, and ductile, was perfect for the vocal demands of the part. His expressive singing and strong acting skills added significant value to his outstanding overall performance. As expected, his interpretation of the famous aria ‘Largo al factotum’ was highly celebrated and won over the audience. " [translation]
